The Impact of Meditation in Community - Flipbook - Page 16
A new way of seeing,
for a new way
of being...
What increases the likelihood of someone reporting 8a different relationship with
their thoughts and feelings9?
85% of people who attend the practice group regularly say that since they have been
meditating with The School of Contemplative Life they have a different relationship
with their thoughts and feelings. For people who attend the practice group occasionally,
this drops to 40%.
Interestingly, the majority of those who attend occasionally do meditate daily or several
times a week for at least 20 minutes at a time. Therefore, practice community
participation seems to be an important variable.
A very unexpected finding (which possibly relates to the above) comes from the
difference in impact reported by people who did have an established practice before
joining us versus people who didn’t. We weren’t expecting much change to be reported
by people who did have an established practice because we thought they may well be
already experiencing many of the benefits we were testing for.
However, the changes reported between people who did and didn’t have an established
practice are generally marginal. Again, the data we collected points to the practice
community (and all that represents - see page 7) as what makes the difference.
